Police say the officer was also taken to hospital for treatment, after being attacked and repeatedly pepper sprayed by the suspect.

It happened around 3:20 p.m., at the Cabela’s at 1818 McCallum Road, where police allege two people had stolen items from the store.

When confronted by a responding officer, one suspect fled while the other attacked the officer with pepper spray, said police. That suspect then ran off, but police allege they returned and assaulted and pepper sprayed the officer again.

BC Emergency Health Services says it airlifted one person to hospital in critical condition, and transported another to hospital in serious condition by ground ambulance.

Police said both suspects were taken into custody Friday afternoon.

The Independent Investigations Office, which reviews situations where someone suffers serious harm during an encounter with police, has been notified, police said.
