Lemon law to protect car buyers

The Doer government introduced a “Lemon Law” Thursday designed to give used car buyers the information they need about a vehicle’s history.

Finance Minister Greg Selinger, who’s also responsible for consumer protection, said the new law will require dealers to disclose information to customers about a vehicle’s repair history and if it’s ever been in any collisions.

The wording of the new regulations will be worked out over the coming months and involve consultation with car dealers.

The regulations will not cover private vehicle sales.

Dozens of “lemons” that come in from the United States are sold to unsuspecting buyers in Manitoba each year.

Many of these have a variety of repetitive issues, from a battery dying or a radio that won’t work to transmission problems
