SASKATOON – Saskatoon gardeners have the option of purchasing finished compost from the city this summer.

Since 2006, the city of Saskatoon has diverted plant waste from the landfill and composted it.

The city is now selling a limited quantity of the finished product to residents at the Highway 7 Compost Depot starting this weekend.

Sales will be held this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as a weekend in August and September.

The cost of compost and mulch is $5 per 20 litre bag and customers have the option of bringing their own 5 gallon container.

“If the residential use compost sale is effective, it could become a permanent program in 2014, and the sales could be expanded to include commercial compost users in the future,” said Brenda Wallace, Environmental Services Branch Manager.
