EDMONTON – Thousands of spectators filled Edmonton’s downtown core Friday morning to take in the K-Days parade, which kicks off the ten-day summer festival.

There were more than one hundred floats in this year’s parade, and a couple of them had some close calls.

“There was a little drama with Tickle Me Elmo, he was serving in the wind a bit. But he slalomed the light post here, so that was probably the craziest part of the parade,” says our Shane Jones, who was co-hosting the parade with Nancy Carlson.

“We were broadcast this year right across Alberta,” she adds. “So it was really nice so many taking part in this, getting involved through social media.”

For four children with cancer, the highlight was getting to spend the day with Mayor Stephen Mandel, who was the parade marshal.

“It was really fun and I think this is gonna be one of my best moments of my life,” said young Naythaniel Budard.

The opportunity was one of six other “dream experiences” the Kids with Cancer Society offers children each year.

“The kids are just so adorable, and the parade is wonderful, so it is a great start to K-Days for me,” said Mandel. “I hope that the kids enjoyed themselves, and I hope that the parade was a great success.”

The midway opened right after the parade. It runs July 19-28 from noon to midnight. For more information, you can visit the K-Days website.
