PINAWA, Man. – Conservation officers are setting off firecrackers in a town northeast of Winnipeg, but it’s no celebration.

They’re using the noise makers and firing rubber bullets in an effort to scare off a lone wolf that has been spotted near Pinawa for the last week.

Officials at the town’s golf course says the brown wolf has been watching their staff as they use riding lawn mowers on the greens.

Stan Schick said he didn’t feel threatened by the wolf, which was about 15 metres away.

But Kelly Leavesley of Manitoba Conservation said the behaviour is concerning because it’s unusual.

Any time an wolf approaches people or acts unafraid, that requires action, Leavesley said.
