Possible cougar sighting in Rithet’s Bog area of Saanich

Police and the BC Conservation Service have been notified after a resident reported seeing a cougar in the Rithet’s Bog nature sanctuary in Saanich.

Police say at about 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, the person saw the animal near the area of some popular walking trails.

There were no other sightings, or any tracks found, but the public is being warned of the possibility a cougar could be in the area.

Saanich Police say walk in groups of two or more people, making enough noise to prevent surprising a cougar, and carry a sturdy walking stick that could be used to fend off an attack if necessary.  Lastly, in areas where cougars may be present, keep children close.
