The University of Regina will open Saskatchewan’s first ever Confucius Institute to promote the Chinese culture, the school announced Friday.

The project is in partnership with the Hunan University in China and it will act to promote the Chinese language.

Hunan University will send two instructors to be based at the University of Regina.

The non-profit, public institution will also provide support for those with academic interests in the areas of Chinese history, cultural diversity, artistic traditions and business practices.

There are about 300 Confucius Institutions in almost 100 countries worldwide.

This project will be the tenth institute of its kind in Canada and the only one in Saskatchewan.
