SAO PAULO, Brazil – Officials say a small twin-engine plane crashed seconds after takeoff in northern Brazil killing three of the six people aboard.

A press officer of Infraero, the state-run agency that runs the country’s airports says the Beechcraft Baron 58 model aircraft exploded after crashing Tuesday at the end of one of the runways of the Eduardo Gomes International Airport in the city of Manaus. He declined to be identified in accordance with department policy.

He says five passengers and the pilot were on the plane. Three people were hospitalized in serious condition. He did not release the names of the victims.

The causes of the accident are being investigated.

The press officer said the airport was operating normally.
