Residents of the Penhorwood Place condos in Fort McMurray who were evacuated from their homes have been delt a devastating blow, the complex has been condemned, and deemed unfit for habitation.

In a letter to residents, Al Penner, the Remediation Liaison for the Condominium Corporation wrote "It is with profound regret that we advise that it is highly unlikely that any person will ever enter any of the 7 Penhorwood structures again, for any reason."

The letter goes on to say that a fence has been erected around the site, and security has been advised not to let anyone onto the property.

Residents in the 168 units were rushed out of the building with little more than clothes on their backs after a condo report questioned the safety of the building’s foundation.

According to the letter to residents, the problems with the building go deeper, including significant fire code violations and evidence that the roof is starting to fail.

"What is the most alarming is that much of the failure in the concrete crawl space walls has occurred after residents were evacuated." Penner writes. "The stability of the concrete structures will deteriorate dramatically as the spring thaw commences."

There are seven buildings in the Penhorwood complex, which was built in 2004. The evacuation left about 300 residents homeless.
