Road closure will cause headaches for motorists

EDMONTON – Edmonton motorists are being encouraged to find alternate routes to downtown as a busy road has been closed.

With construction underway on the new Walterdale Bridge, Queen Elizabeth Park Road has been shut down.

“Alternative routes would be Scona Road, down 99 Street, or Connors Road and then across the Low Level, or, of course, you can come 98th Avenue and then go across James MacDonald as well,” says Allan Bartman, City of Edmonton Transportation Services.

Walterdale Hill and Walterdale Bridge will remain open as construction continues on the new bridge.

The road is scheduled to be closed until November. Bartman adds that a bonus and penalty clause has been added to the contractor’s agreement “to add some incentive for the contractor in and out as quickly as possible.”

“We really appreciate the public’s patience and we’re looking forward getting this bridge built over the next couple of years.”

33,000 motorists cross the 100-year-old Walterdale Bridge every day.

The Kinsmen Centre and the John Walter museum will remain open during construction.
