A former Kelowna MLA will become the new namesake of the Southern Interior Cancer Centre in the Okanagan city.
“Naming the Southern Interior Cancer Centre after her will be a lasting legacy of her kindness, her passion for helping others and her generosity of spirit,” says Premier Gordon Campbell.
Hawkins served as Kelowna-Mission MLA from 1996 to 2009. During that tenure, she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
Since her own bone cancer diagnosis, Hawkins has helped raise nearly $3 million for the BC Cancer Foundation.
“Sindi’s will to help others fight and beat cancer is an inspiration to millions of people," said Campbell, in announcing the facility renaming.
The Sindi Hawkins Cancer Centre for the Southern Interior serves more than 700,000 people, from Penticton to the Alberta border, to Quesnel in the north and Lytton in the west.
Hawkins lost her battle with cancer this morning at her new home in Calgary, where she moved to receive treatment and be closer to family. She had received two bone marrow transplants.
