The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a statement Tuesday night that York Regional Police officers were investigating a carjacking earlier in the day.

At around 7:45 p.m., the agency said Peel Regional Police officers tried to stop the vehicle at a gas station parking near Torbram Road and Williams Parkway.

The statement said there was an unspecified “interaction” and a gun was fired by a Peel police officer, striking a 24-year-old suspect from the vehicle. A police spokesperson told reporters the man was taken to hospital with injuries that are believed to be non-life-threatening.

Police said two other men in their 20s were taken into custody.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of officers responding to calls that have resulted in death, serious injury, or alleged sexual assault.
