Premier says High River state of emergency will end Friday, as planned

CALGARY- Despite demands from opposition leaders to extend the state of emergency in High River, Premier Alison Redford says it will end on Friday.

But Redford is reassuring High River residents the province is not abandoning them.

“We are not going anywhere,” Redford said in a stop in High River on Thursday. “We are here for the long haul.”

On Wednesday,  Wildrose leader Danielle Smith— the MLA for Highwood—sent a letter to the municipal affairs minister asking  the government to keep the state of emergency in place because the town still faces a major flood cleanup.

The premier, however, there’s no real need to do that as it wouldn’t help to speed up recovery efforts.

Redford also says the province is handing control of the community back to High River council.

She says provincial support will remain.

The state of emergency went into effect when the town was swamped by floodwaters three weeks ago.
