Car fire near Balzac guts Jetta, backs up highway traffic

CALGARY – Traffic on the QE II was slowed to a crawl on Wednesday evening, when a vehicle caught fire on the side of the road.

The driver of a 2001 Volkswagon Jetta was travelling northbound near the Highway 566 (Balzac) overpass, when he started experiencing what he thought was engine trouble.

After pulling over and checking under the hood of the car, the driver noticed flames coming through the firewall and into the passenger side of the vehicle.

The Jetta soon became fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from Rockyview County rushed to the scene and extinguished the blaze.

Northbound traffic on the QE II near Balzac was reduced to two lanes for about an hour to allow emergency crews to contain the fire, slowing the flow of traffic.

The driver was uninjured, and crews are investigating what could have caused the fire.
