The 20-year-old was performing a free show at a public housing project in the Sao Paulo city of Campinas when he was shot in front of about 3,000 fans.

He died Sunday in hospital.

Pellegrine’s father Roland told reporters his son was killed out of jealousy. “[He] was a very good boy, a charismatic boy, docile,” he said. “He had no enemies.”

Police said they do not yet have a suspect or motive.

Daleste is described as having been a part of Brazil’s “Ostentatious Funk” scene, a violent brand of rap. According to Billboard, his song “Apologia” was about killing police officers.

Fans are sharing their reactions on a Facebook memorial page.
