Calgary police charge teen with sexual assault of young girl

Calgary police have charged a 16-year-old male in connection with the sexual assault of an eight-year-old girl.

At around 7.30 p.m. on July 3, the girl was outside a home with her 10-year-old friend in the area of 61 Avenue and Silver Mead Crescent N.W.,  when they were approached by a teen on a bike.

Under the pretence of playing a game, the teen lured the eight-year-old into some nearby bushes, where she was sexually assaulted.

When the assault was interrupted by a neighbour, the teen jumped on his bike and rode off.

Police say tips from the public helped lead to an arrest.

The teen, who cannot be named because he is underage, is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference with a child under 16 and uttering threats.

Detective Jeff Klinger of the Calgary Police Child Abuse Unit elaborated on nature of the charges. “This is a person that is known to the [Calgary] Police Service and known to the child abuse unit, and the pressed charges are in relation to breaching a previous order. This person does have a history of similar offences.”

The offender and the victims were unknown to one another, but conditions from previous offences required that he stay away from children of that age.

“What’s important is that this person receives the supervision in the meantime to protect not only himself… but also [that] the community at large can be satisfied that this person won’t be in a position to re-offend any time in the near future.”
