LIVERPOOL, N.S. – The RCMP say a 40-year-old man has died in custody in Nova Scotia.
The Mounties were called Monday at around 11:15 p.m. to a report of an intoxicated man on Riverhead Road in Port Mouton along the province’s South Shore.
Officers found the man laying on the ground, and paramedics came to the scene and assessed him before he was taken to a police cell in Liverpool.

Shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday*, paramedics were called to the RCMP detachment in Liverpool after the man was found unresponsive in his cell but they were unable to revive him.
He was taken to the Queens General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death, and the matter has been referred to the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team.
Ron MacDonald, the team’s director, says the investigation will look at RCMP policies for checking on inmates and how those policies were applied in this case.
