It’s time for the mo to go.
Any man, teen or pubescent boy growing a “˜stach for the Movember campaign has one day left of feeling the fuzzies – or risk wearing facial hair for no apparent reason in December.
The Movember campaign runs all November, encouraging men to grow facial hair in order to raise awareness – and funds – for prostate cancer research.
The campaign rules dictate all men must state with a clean shaven face – and then they are not allowed to shave their upper lip until November 30.
The movement quickly spread in Regina and didn’t stop at the Saskatchewan Legislature. Everyone from the Regina Pats and MLA Greg Ottenbrett sported facial hair in the name of prostate cancer.
“The last time I had one like this for real, I won’t date myself but I had a mullet and an Al Camino,” Ottenbrett said.
Annoying and unsightly for some, it has made a difference locally and abroad.
This month Canada raised more than $18 million in funds – putting it in the number one spot in the world – beating Australia, the U.K. and the U.S.
Top Regina fundraiser Robert Watson raised more than $22,000, putting him in the third spot right across the Canada.
“Just knowing that one in six men will get prostrate cancer and if you can catch it early is good” Watson said. “Exams are important, very important.”
Watson is the president and CEO of SaskPower and also sits on the Prostate Cancer Canada Board.
