Editor’s Note: Toronto police initially identified the victim who died in the shooting as 16 years old. They later clarified the age of the victim to be 21.
Update: the man has been identified as rapper Houdini
Toronto police say a 21-year-old man is dead and two others are injured, including a 15-year-old boy, after they were shot Tuesday afternoon in the city’s downtown core.
Police said officers responded to multiple calls for a shooting in the area of King West and Peter streets at around 4 p.m.
Police said there were reports of people screaming and running from the area.
A total of three people were shot: a 21-year-old man, a 15-year-old boy and a 27-year-old woman, officials said.
The 21-year-old man was pronounced dead. Police initially said the deceased victim was a 16-year-old boy, but in an update, Det. Sgt. Andy Singh said he is 21.
The other two victims are expected to recover.
Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders attended the scene and is appealing for witnesses.
He said it appears the shooting was targeted.
“It turns out the suspect vehicle, based on the evidence we have right now, was waiting for about 40 minutes,” Saunders said.
He said the suspect was waited until the victims made their way to a vehicle.
“The suspect vehicle made a u-turn, came out and started firing at this group of individuals,” Saunders said, adding that it’s believed the two male victims were targeted but the woman had “absolutely nothing” to do with the situation.
The vehicle the victims were heading to, meanwhile, left the scene and it’s unclear where it went, he said.
Saunders said there were at least two people in the suspect vehicle, a driver and the alleged shooter who fired from the passenger side.
Officers said they located a firearm at the scene but it’s unclear how it relates to the incident.
Saunders called the shooting a “very solvable” case given the amount of evidence gathered thus far, and added that the suspect vehicle has been described as a blue tiguan.
The IDs of the victims have not been released and officers haven’t released a suspect description.
