Hurricane Erick affects vacation areas in Mexico

TORONTO – Though Hurricane Erick continues to churn off the coast of Mexico, it is causing headaches for popular tourist destinations.

Erick’s maximum sustained winds are 130 km/h but the hurricane’s tropical storm-force winds extend about 165 km.

Puerto Vallarta and Manzillo, popular vacation spots on the southwest coast of Mexico, are experiencing tropical storm force-winds and plenty of rain. Puerto Vallarta is expected to receive about 50 mm of rain over the next two days.

Erick is also causing ocean swells along the southwestern Mexican coast.

Tropical storm watches are in affect for Baja California as Erick is expected to continue moving northwest over the next few days. It is currently moving at 15 km/h.

The National Hurricane Center out of Miami, Florida, expects Erick to weaken on Sunday.
