Tornado watch ended for parts of northwestern Alberta

Funnel cloud spotted in Grande Prairie on Friday. Ken Sawich

EDMONTON – Environment Canada has ended a tornado watch for areas of northwestern Alberta.

Earlier Friday the warning was issued for Slave Lake, Grande Prairie, Valleyview, Beaverlodge, Peace River, Fairview, High Prairie, and Manning. At 4:19 p.m., the watch was expanded to include Wabasca, Peerless Lake, Gift Lake, and Cadotte Lake.

The watch means conditions are favourable in those areas for the development of funnel clouds or weak tornadoes. According to Environment Canada, these types of funnel clouds form out of large cumulus clouds or very weak thunderstorms, and normally, do not have the strength to reach the ground.
