Canadian rugby team wins silver in Moscow

MONTREAL – It was a warm welcome for a local rugby star.

21-year-old Bianca Farella was greeted by friends and family at Trudeau airport Tuesday evening.

She was part of the women’s team that won silver this weekend at the Rugby Sevens World Cup in Moscow.

Canada defeated host Russia 15-12 in the quarter-finals and Spain 10-5 in the semifinals before losing to New Zealand 29-12 in the gold-medal final.

After their win, the Canadian team is ranked second in the world.

Farella, a Concordia University student says she hopes the silver win in Moscow will bring more attention to women’s rugby.

She was previously named Rookie of the Year at an all-Canadian in women’s rugby the by Canadian Inter-University Sport (CIS).

Farella won’t have much time to rest though.

She leaves Montreal again on July 18th, 2013 for a rugby tournament in Colorado.
