The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says a 30-year-old man has been pronounced dead on scene after a police-involved shooting in the city’s north end on Thursday.
Officials said the shooting happened in the parking lot of a Best Western Hotel near Norfinch Drive and Finch Avenue West, just west of Jane Street, at around 12:18 p.m.
Toronto police said they had received reports that a man was in a car armed with a gun and a knife.
The SIU said when an officer arrived, he exited the cruiser and the man also exited his vehicle. Following an interaction the officer fired his gun multiple times and the man was struck.
Toronto paramedics said they did not transport the man. The SIU later confirmed the man was pronounced dead on scene.
Police and SIU said the investigation into the mid-day shooting is ongoing.
Toronto Police’s 31 Division is also just steps away from where the shooting occurred. Sources tell Global News that it was the man who called 911.
The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury or an alleged sexual assault.
