HALIFAX – The Canadian Red Cross says disaster volunteers are being deployed from Atlantic Canada to assist with flood relief efforts in Alberta.

The organization says more than 50 trained volunteers have offered to help to date.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Of that group, more than a dozen are being sent West from the four Atlantic provinces.

Officials say more deployments are anticipated over the next 72 hours as disaster response needs in smaller Alberta communities become clearer.

The Red Cross also says people ordered from their homes in Alberta are registering with the organization by phone through operation centres in Halifax, Moncton, N.B., and Saint John, N.B.

Since Friday, more than 2,500 calls have been handled by a team of about 60 volunteers in the three Maritime centres.
