Sexual Assault Investigation
The DRPS is working with the Peterborough-Lakefield Police Service and searching for a male suspect after a 12-year-old female was taken in a van from Peterborough and sexually assaulted in the Bowmanville area early this morning. On Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 at approximately 2:20
a.m., DRPS officers were called to the back of Courtice High School after a citizen heard a scream. Officers arrived to discover a red mini van parked behind the school in the darkness. The van immediately sped off and a pursuit was initiated. Due to the unknown nature of the call and the high speeds involved, the pursuit was terminated for safety reasons. The van was discovered a short time later abandoned in the vicinity of Tennyson Avenue and Harmony Road South in Oshawa. A perimeter was set up and the K-9 unit deployed but the suspect was not found. Officers then discovered a 12-year-old Peterborough female behind Courtice High School, the victim of an alleged sexual assault. She was taken to Lakeridge Health-Oshawa hospital with non life-threatening injuries and members of the DRPS Sexual Assault Unit continue to
investigate.
Investigators believe the 12-year-old female had been at a birthday party in south Peterborough with several other young females when they left the party at approximately 1:30 a.m. They were on a street when they came into contact with a red van. Although the details are still unknown at this time, the 12-year-old female ended up inside the van, which then travelled south to Courtice High School. The other females did not get into the van and were found unharmed in Peterborough. The DRPS is currently working with Peterborough Police on a possible suspect and the investigation is continuing.
