Winnipeg urged to “Speak Up” on garbage and recycling services

Winnipeg residents are being invited to drop by an open house and share their thoughts on the future of garbage and recycling services in the city.

There are ten open houses scheduled from Monday, Mar. 14 to Thursday, Mar. 24 as part of the development of a garbage and recycling master plan, which will be presented to city council in the fall.

“We invite residents to drop in and comment on two key parts of the plan – options to improve garbage, recycling and composting services, and the future of Brady Landfill," Darryl Drohomerski, manager of the city’s Solid Waste Services, said in a recent release, "We will use this feedback to prepare a plan that has the potential to increase our diversion rate from 17 per cent to over 50 per cent.”

The open houses are scheduled to take place on the following dates, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. (unless otherwise indicated):

Monday, Mar. 14: Canad Inns Garden City, 2100 McPhillips Street

Tuesday, Mar. 15: Dakota Collegiate, 661 Dakota Street

Wednesday, Mar. 16: Sturgeon Creek Community Centre, 210 Rita Street

Thursday, Mar. 17: Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex, 999 Sargent Avenue

Saturday, Mar. 19: (10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.) Park City West Community Centre, 115 Sanford Fleming Road or (2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.) Bronx Park Community Centre, 720 Henderson Highway

Wednesday, Mar. 23: Crescentwood Community Centre, 1170 Corydon Avenue

The six-month public consultation process began in November when more than 100 residents attended a one-day expo to share their vision for the future of garbage and recycling services in Winnipeg, participating in round table discussions and hearing from a panel of experts in the waste management field. So far, thousands of residents have also provided their feedback through the Speak Up on Garbage website.

Residents can also give feedback online here.
