It’s been quite a week for Winnipeg’s 10-year-old singing sensation, Maria Aragon. First, there was an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres show in Los Angeles on Tuesday, and now, she can add ABC’s Good Morning America to her résumé.
The Isaac Brock student appeared on the popular morning news program on Thursday morning, chatting with host George Stephanopoulos about her rapid rise to fame after posting a YouTube video of her singing her own arrangement of Lady Gaga’s song, Born This Way. Lady Gaga saw it online and posted a glowing comment on Aragon’s performance on Twitter last Thursday, and since then, the fifth grader’s video has been viewed over 13 million times.
Aragon also spoke on the phone with Lady Gaga and has been invited to perform a duet with her on stage in Toronto next month.
During her chat with Stephanopoulos, Maria described why she chose to cover “Born This Way.”
"It’s about being yourself, because God made you who you are and you’re no different than anybody else, so you shouldn’t let yourself down because God accepts you for who you are,” Maria told the host.
She also added that she was “thrilled” to speak with Lady Gaga, though she is a bit nervous to perform with her on-stage.
“Of course I’m going to be nervous, because she’s like so incredible, and I’m only beginning,” she said.
Aragon’s appearance on the Good Morning America show concluded with the 10-year-old musician performing her version of Born This Way.
