Guilty plea in hammer killing

A Winnipeg man who beat his common law wife to death with a hammer in 2008 could offer no hints to what sparked the brutal attack.

“I wish I had an explanation why this happened but I don’t. I’m sorry,” Kevin Strong told a Winnipeg court Monday after pleading guilty to Second Degree Murder in the death of Shannon Scromeda.

The 25 year old mom and secretary was found dead in her home on Manhattan Avenue in Elmwood on April 19, 2008. Strong, the father of a young boy with Scromeda, was charged in the killing.

During the guilty plea Monday, the 30 year old Strong admitted he had been high on crack cocaine at the time of the killing. And he expressed regret at not taking responsibility sooner for Scromeda’s death.

“I should have plead guilty two years ago but I was afraid,” Strong told court. “I’m sorry it took so long to make this decision.”

Strong was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for ten years. Scromeda’s family was present in court for the plea and sentencing but declined to comment.
