Organizers of the annual dragon boat festival are hoping a recent theft will help speed up the process to build the group a permanent home.
The society currently keeps all of its equipment in a simple storage trailer, which has been broken into several times over the years.
This time, the thieves stole some generators and power tools.
The trailer is now boarded up and signs warn of a new alarm, and this latest incident is sounding alarm bells at city hall as well.
The problem has caught the attention of NDPA councillor George Affleck who is proposing a motion to find the paddling community home a proper home.
The motion may get tangled in bureaucracy and councillor Kerry Jang says an effort has already been underway for quite some time and staff are developing a series of reports on the best steps forward.
“Right now we’re at the point where we’re waiting to be granted a permission to have a piece of property set aside. As everyone knows development is creeping around the creek in both directions… but we’re fearing we’re going to get crowded out,” says Anita Webster with dragon boat festival society.
The festival is marking its 25th anniversary this weekend.
