Financial institution launches first cheque cashing app in Sask.

SASKATOON – It’s a first for Saskatchewan banking as Affinity Credit Union launches its brand new mobile app, that allows clients to deposit cheques using their cellphones.

Affinity customers can now make deposits anywhere, anytime and in less than a minute, without having to visit a branch or ATM.

To use it, members will first have to download the free mobile banking app and then take a clear picture of the front and back of the cheque in order for it to be processed.

“We want to ensure that we help our members not to deposit an item more than once, so there are reminders that are available to pop up,” said Mark Lane, CEO of Affinity.

Officials say there are several anti-fraud measures in place to protect customers. They also advise keeping deposited cheques for 60 days before destroying them.

The app is expected to become available to members of other credit unions across the country in the coming months.
