Ice cream truck scooping out fun

A nostalgic tune heard through the streets of Lethbridge can only mean one thing: Sugar Daddy’s Ice Cream Truck is on your block.

Older generations recognize the sweet lullaby, and now parents are watching their own race to the sidewalk for a summer time treat.

Meet Jeff Kashman, owner and creator of Sugar Daddy’s Ice Cream Truck. A kid at heart, this city bus driver says he’d been toying with the idea for years, before deciding to jump in head first this summer.

“They used to have Dickie Dee here, the bikes. They’d run around two, three years ago or longer. Then in Calgary last year or the year before I saw an ice cream truck, and then this year I thought man, I need something to do this summer,” said Kashman. “So ice cream truck it was.”

The concept is simple; all this four man operation needs is a driver, cashier and customers with a sweet tooth.

Kashman bought an old Canada Post truck, and the ‘Ice Cream Truck’ ringtone off iTunes.

Add a freezer, some speakers, and at the start of June this truck was in business.

“It’s been good,” said Kashman. “The kids have been excited, everyone’s been excited. The little kids are running out and they hear the music, even some of the parents. They get excited and run out, and ‘Holy cow it’s an ice cream truck! I haven’t seen one since I was a kid.'”

While pleasantly surprised by the truck’s sweet success, Kashman says he’s not about to quit his day job.

But young and old, Lethbridge residents can count on the truck’s familiar tune and summer treats to stick around.

In just two weeks, the ice cream truck already has requests into the next few months.

With all that said, there’s just one thing left to ask… Who screams for ice cream?
