A decomposing body was reportedly found in one of the hotel’s month-to-month rentals, though it is unclear when that discovery was made.

Const. Ash Gutheinz, media officer for Kingston police, says police were called to the downtown hotel and gentlemen’s club just after noon on Tuesday.

Staff at the Plaza say a strong smell was present in the hotel prior to discovering the body but that they believed it was coming from a dead animal trapped somewhere in the building.

It wasn’t until one staff member reported liquid dripping from a ceiling that they thought something more serious had occurred, staff said.

Kingston police’s major crimes unit was investigating, but Gutheinz said later on Tuesday that police do not believe there was any foul play involved in the death.

Kingston police have yet to release the identity of the man but say the 54-year-old had not been seen for several days before his body was discovered.

The coroner is investigating the cause of death and Kingston police are in the process of notifying next of kin.
