UPDATE: Bernard oil spill contained

A truck showed up shortly after and began vacuuming the leaked material from the sewer system. Kelly Hayes/Global Okanagan

KELOWNA — City officials say none of the oil spilled from a container has reached the water system.

The lid blew off a paving contractor’s oil tank at Richter and Bernard Avenue shortly before noon today.

Brenda Konechny witnessed the incident from her office.

“The oil started spewing out of the tank and going everywhere. It started going down into the sewer drains. One guy got sprayed with oil.”

Officials say the oil was contained to a catch basin.

“City water quality personnel as well as Golder and Associates environmental experts were on site to supervise the clean up,” says spokesman Tom Wilson.

“No oil made it into the water system – the catch basin did what it was supposed to do and contained it. When there’s a lot of drainage into the catch basin, like during that big rain the other day, it drains from there into a dry well, where it gets released into the groundwater or the lake. The dry well was tested and no oil was found.”

Wilson says the oil was sucked out of the catch basin and sand was spread to minimize oil penetration into the new asphalt.
