Man who blinded Brazilian student in Calgary shooting declared dangerous offender

CALGARY – The man involved in a shootout that blinded an innocent bystander walking with his girlfriend on a Calgary street will remain in prison indefinitely.

A judge declared Roland Warawa a dangerous offender. In a lengthy written decision released on Thursday, provincial court Judge Catherine Skene concluded that Ronald Ashley Warawa, 32, met the criteria for such a designation.

"The evidence adduced shows Warawa has a well-entrenched, long-term, maladaptive patter of functioning. His addictions and deviant behaviors are resilient. The past conduct has been proven to likely continue. I find his motivation to change questionable, not credible nor backed up by behavior."

Jose Neto, a Brazilian exchange student, was hit in the face by a stray bullet fired by Warawa during a shootout in September 2008. Warawa pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, but also admitted to shooting another man 12 days before Neto was hurt.

Warawa already had a conviction for attempted murder after he shot a jewelry store owner in the neck during a robbery.
