Telus and the Children’s Ability Fund are giving a big gift to 40 students in Edmonton Public Schools.

Telus has committed $16,000 to the purchase of 100 Alphasmart Neo keyboards to be distributed in the Edmonton capital region.

Students at Grovenor School received 12 Alphasmart Neo keyboards on Thursday morning. The students that will be using these keyboards were excited to show off the new learning tool.

"It helps me catch up with other people and easier to find the letters," student Justin Weisser said.

The keyboards are designed for unique learning needs like dyslexia or a lack of fine-motor skills. Everything the students type is recorded onto a hard drive, and then can be recalled on a word program.

"What’s important to understand is it doesn’t replace regular learning, it supports regular learning. So kids still learn those skills but they don’t rely on them as their only option," Leona Morrison, principal of Grovenor School told Global News.

"As technology advances and devices such as the Alphasmart come along, we’re much more able to do more for individuals with disabilities," said Jim Banks of the Children’s Ability Fund.

The Children’s Ability Fund’s "Keyboards for Kids" program was first introduced ten years ago.
