City holding public consultations on future of Gardiner Expressway

TORONTO – Waterfront Toronto and City of Toronto officials, who are organizing the event, hope to hear the views of the public on the four alternatives that could shape changes to the Gardiner Expressway.

The four options are maintaining, improving, replacing or removing the elevated portion of the Gardiner Expressway from Jarvis Street to Leslie Street.

People can register for the event here.

In December, a Global News investigation detailed an alarming number of issues with Toronto’s aging and crumbling Gardiner Expressway, from falling concrete to a risk of “punch-through” of the bridge deck by a vehicle.

Since then, the city budgeted $495 million to invest in the rehabilitation of the expressway.

Prior to any decision, the city will be conducting an Environmental Assessment on the Gardiner to determine what changes can be made.

The assessment will also consider how the changes would affect facilities and parks near the expressway.
