ALBERTA – A survey released Monday indicated Albertans are the worst distracted driving offenders in Canada; so it comes as no surprise that most Albertans could not pass their learners exam if they were asked to take it again.
A study done out of the University of Calgary for the Alberta Motor Association asked 2400 Alberta drivers questions they would have been required to answer correctly to successfully obtain their learners permit.
A whopping 89 per cent failed the test, leaving only 11 per cent getting at least 22 of the 25 questions correct.
Even Sabreena Anowar, a U of C graduate student who is helping conduct the study, found the results alarming.
“What you learn is what you implement when you drive, so if you don’t remember what you’ve learned, than how do you drive safely?”
The study also found men scored higher than women, motorcyclists scored higher than vehicle drivers, and younger drivers beat out older ones.
The University of Calgary and AMA plan to use the results to find better ways to improve driver knowledge and the retention of it, however, no formal recommendations are being made to Alberta Transportation as of yet.
