REGINA – After weeks of discussion, Regina city council unanimously voted to move ahead with its plan to annex several parcels of land from the RM of Sherwood.
The decision will allow the Queen City to grow to a population of 500-thousand people.
Before the plan can move forward, negotiations will still have to be held with the RM at a meeting this August.

The RM of Sherwood is opposed to the plan and has released a development plan of its own.
If the two sides aren’t able to come to an agreement, it’ll be taken to the provincial government.
“This is what every city does in Canada, every city grows particularly in this environment where were growing quickly it alters the boundaries to accommodate growth,” said Regina Mayor Michael Fougere. “If we don’t do that – then we are going to have serious problem attracting people to live here so it’s critical we do this.”
The annexation is just one part of the comprehensive housing strategy – another plan that council approved last night was to build up to 1,000 new rental suites in the Green on Gardiners subdivision in the city’s east end.
