The city of Edmonton is launching a program to help residents install solar panels to generate electricity.
A budget of $200,000 has been announced for the pilot project, which will pay up to $9,000 to help residents install the solar panels in their homes, and up to $18,000 for businesses.
“The City is committed to encouraging the use of local renewable energy sources that will reduce local greenhouse gas emissions,” said Mayor Stephen Mandel in a news release. “This project could result in more solar electric generating facilities throughout the city, and is one more step towards a cleaner, greener Edmonton.”
Applications for the program will be evaluated on a first-come-first served basis, and residents will receive the funding after installation and certification. Anyone who receives funding under the program will be subject to a follow-up review by the city.
The city of Edmonton sees over 2,300 hours of sunshine every year and is considered to be one of the country’s sunniest cities.
