A large working fire on Maryland Street closed the road on Wednesday morning.
Winnipeg police say they fire began around 4 a.m. and fire paramedic crews were still on scene at 6 a.m.
The fire was in a two-and-a-half storey vacant home, said the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.
“Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered a well-involved fire, with heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof and windows of the structure. Due to the dangerous conditions, a defensive attack was initiated,” the WFPS said.
“The fire was declared under control at 6:30 a.m. but crews expect to be on scene throughout the day extinguishing hot spots.”
The road has been closed between Ellice Avenue and St. Matthews Avenue and police are asking people to avoid the area. Once it re-opens, the roads will be water and ice covered and will be slick, said the WFPS.
There were no injuries. Two homes nearby were evacuated as a precaution and the people living in those homes were sheltered in a transit bus to stay warm.
The cause of the fire will be under investigation.
