Travis Vader appeared in an Edmonton court room on Tuesday on charges unrelated to the disappearance of Lyle and Marie McCann, who have been missing since July 3rd.
Outside the courtroom, Vader’s sister Bobbi-Jo Vader told reporters she does not believe her brother had anything to do with the McCann case.
"If you knew Travis as a person, you would know that he would never harm or do anything to any innocent person." she told reporters. When asked if she had any words for the McCann family, she said "I really hope they find their parents, from the bottom of my heart."
RCMP named Travis Vader as a person of interest in the McCann case, and a manhunt followed before Vader was arrested on outstanding warrants. His sister said the arrest was a relief to the family, as they feared for his safety.
"It was kind of a blessing to us when they actually did get him, and he was in jail."
According to Bobbi-Jo Vader, Travis was in Edmonton from July 4th to July 9th, staying with a family friend. She said he came to the city because he was sick and needed to rest.
"Travis has been running from the police for a while."
Lyle and Marie McCann were last seen on July 3rd. Their motorhome was found burning at a campground near Edson on July 5th. After an extensive search, the couple’s Hyundai Tucson was found in the bush near Carrot Creek on July 16th.
Reporters asked Bobbi-Jo Vader what vehicle Vader was driving when he came into the city at the beginning of the month.
"I can’t comment on that at this time." she said, adding "I can tell you it was not the SUV."
