Your Thoughts: Fishy pedicure could be coming to Edmonton

It’s a treatment that started building popularity in a handful of spas around Europe and Asia, and the Doctor Fish pedicure has now grown in popularity worldwide. Doctor or Garra Rufa Fish are originally from Turkey, and are known for their ability to nibble away at spa client’s feet, removing dead skin cells while leaving healthy skin behind.

The treatment is also a source of controversy for many – health authorities in fourteen states have banned the procedure because the same fish could be used to treat multiple clients, which could increase the chance of viruses or bacteria spreading. In Canada, the Doctor fish are only approved for use in Quebec, and several businesses in Montreal offer the treatment.

One esthetician in Edmonton is hoping to offer the treatment in the future. She says on her blog, "They are so special because they (sic) are toothless fish that gently nibble as they exfoliate, with a unique ability to provide healing benefits for those suffering from psoriasis or eczema."
