Some residents in Strathcona County are back in their homes after a fire broke out near their neighbourhood.
Fire officials believe the fire started in a ditch near the intersection of Wye road and range road 213 just before 6:00 pm Wednesday. The flames quickly spread, forcing one household to evacuate while many other residents left their homes voluntarily.
"I look out my window across the street and there’s a big plume of flames and black smoke." Evacuee Bruce Gartner describes. "So we just started panicking and packing up what we could, loading up the trailer and the dogs. Police came around and said to leave."
About 46 firefighters from Strathcona and Beaver Counties were on hand to fight the brush fire. Crews were able to get the fire under control before it hit any houses. However, one landowner’s vehicle, boats and out buildings were damaged.
Fire investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire. At this point, they say the blaze doesn’t appear suspicious.
