Our recent temperature swings, and the accompanied thawing and then freezing, have created frazil ice on parts of the Red River.
That’s the sharp, jagged looking ice.
The province says an ice jam at Sugar Island, which is just north of Selkirk, is slowly growing.
No properties are in danger. Still, Selkirk Mayor David Bell says all eyes remain on the river.
“We know that ice is moving. It is flowing fairly well throughout the day. Right now, we’re at a little bit of a standstill; but I’m fairly confident this will move out," says Bell.
Bell also tells Global News that despite the jam, this is still considered to be a good year.
