The passing of one of Edmonton’s prominent Catholic figures has saddened many Edmontonians.
Father Michael Troy passed away in his sleep early Friday morning.
A teacher at St. Joseph High School for 32 years, the Catholic School Board honoured Father Troy’s many years of service by naming a new junior high school after him in 2003.
Staff and students at Father Troy Junior High School located in the city’s south, as well as other schools across the district say that he was friend and teacher to many.
Father Troy was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1917 and joined a religious missionary order know as The Spiritans.
He moved to Edmonton in 1965 and began teaching at Archbishop MacDonald High School before moving on to St. Joseph.
Executive was director of the Archdiocesan Mission Council and organizer of local initiatives such as the Holy Childhood Association- a mission society for children in kindergarten through grade eight to help raise money for third-world countries.
He also was also editor of The Spiritan, a worldwide missionary magazine.
Father Michael Troy was 92.
