Ice cutter sinks on Red River

One of the machines cutting up ice on the Red River broke through Saturday morning and sank to the bottom.

This has never happened before.

Around 7:30 am, the remote control skid steer broke through the ice just upstream of the Selkirk lift bridge. The 14,000 pound machine is now sitting under 5 metres of water and ice.

Fortunately, it’s a remote controlled machine, so no one was hurt.

Darrell Kupchik, the operations manger for North Red Waterway Maintenance, tells Global News that today’s above normal temperatures were a factor in the incident.

A dive team is going to attempt to recover the $130,000-thousand machine Sunday. It’s believed the cutter can be repaired and made operational again.
