18 year old sentenced for Wetaskiwin fire

Shawn Robert Douglas Phinney has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after setting fire to an abandoned senior citizen’s complex in Wetaskiwin last November.

The 18-year old plead guilty to arson, one count of possesion of stolen property and failing to comply with conditions of recognizance in Wetaskiwin Provincial Court on Feb.18.

The fire at the Good Shepard retirement home caused nearly $400,000 in damages. No one was injured.

Phinney was also sentenced to an additional 15 days and ordered to pay a $600 fine.

One other count of stolen property was withdrawn.

He is also prohibited from owning a firearm for the next 10 years.
