A safety committee recommended today that an L-shape shield be installed in every Winnipeg taxi, to surround and protect drivers. The Taxicab Board is expected to approve the suggestion.
Fares could go up temporarily to pay for the devices.
In the last few weeks, several cab drivers have been victims of crime. They’re been robbed, assaulted and some have had their taxis stolen. Knives have been the suspects’ weapon of choice in most attacks.
“There’s also a stainless steel plate along the bottom and side that would prevent any sort of knife attack. I think it’s an excellent idea,” said Patrol Sergeant Rick Zurba
The committee also recommended the installation of a flashing 911 distress light on top of the cab. It would alert passersby that a driver needs help. A public education campaign would precede this measure.
Other safety measures under consideration include installing special immobilizers in cabs that would stop the taxis from running if stolen, and putting debit machines in cabs to limit the amount of cash on board.
