A herd of 33 horses was seized near Bonnyville on Friday. Three stallions, six foals and twenty four pregnant mares were removed from the property. The SPCA also discovered bodies of three horses.

Eight of the horses were reportedly near death when they were seized, but all have been fed and watered and are expected to survive. Many of the horses were suffering from cuts and limps. Nearly the entire herd was skin and bones under their long winter coats.

Charges have not yet been laid in the case.

This is the second time in less than a month that the SPCA has stepped in to assist distressed horses. 16 starving horses were removed from a property near Edson on February 17th.
