A 13-year-old boy from Durham Region has been arrested after homemade pipe bombs were found in his home, and police believe the youth may have planned to take the weapons to his school.

The investigation began after a grade 8 student from Courtice, just east of Oshawa, did not show up for class at Dr. G.J. MacGillivray Public School on Wednesday.

"We called home, then heard from police a student had left a threatening note," said Judy Malfar, of the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board.

The boy’s mother found the note a few hours later and immediately phone police.

Police say the note contained threats to use homemade bombs to hurt other students at the school .

Later that afternoon, while police were interviewing the mother, the teenager came home and was arrested.

"When he arrived home, he had on his person a pellet gun, as well as in his room, explosive devices including a homemade pipe bomb," said Sgt. Nancy Van Rooy of Durham Regional Police.

His school principal says no one saw this coming.

"This is not a boy I see in my office," said Jean Marchand. "I don’t know where this came. He has lots of friends."

The school was on a modified lockdown for a couple of hours while police searched for bombs and weapons, but nothing was found inside.

The boy is facing several charges, including possession of a dangerous weapon and threatening death and bodily harm.

He is currently in custody and will appear for a bail hearing Friday morning.
